Improvements in Mobile Contactless Payment Interfaces

<Enhancements to the existing product>

We’ve enhanced the user interface of HCE-based contactless payments. This is a part of our mobile banking app.The added features include:

  • New labels, icons, card design and other elements to comply with IPS requirements

  • Root check with the option to disable HCE for increased security

  • Support of push-notifications on card blocking, security alerts, and other events 

  • Improved interface for payments in offline mode

  • The option to display an actual picture of the customer’s card

  • Step-by-step HCE payment tutorial 

  • And other features that improve usability and overall customer experience

Apple Pay In-app Provisioning

Now WAY4 supports the complete customer engagement cycle for Apple Pay. Without leaving our mobile banking app end-users can see promotion screens, add cards to Apple Pay Wallet and receive confirmation messages. 

For each card in the user’s list, we have added a colorful icon. It indicates whether the card is linked to Apple Pay Wallet or not.

In-app tutorial

Now your clients can watch tutorials encouraging them to try new functionality. Whenusers open the mobile banking app or certain menu item, they would see a sequence of promo screens. It serves toexplain complex features step-by-step or highlight special offers.

This WAY4 release includes explanation screens for HCE contactless payments. Our team can create more tutorials per request.  

You can also produce new tutorials in-house.

We continue enhancing this stand-alone channel solution, built on an innovative platform and featuring a unique design.

Advanced Google Analytics

Now our solution can supply Google Analytics with extended data about customer activity.  Without leaving the Google interface, you can see statistics on:

  • transfers and payments done via web/mobile banking

  • online user registrations and authorizations

  • call center requests

  • visitors and clicks

  • and more

When users navigate your web/mobile banking menu, their path is tracked as well. However, all sensitive information – e.g. transaction amounts – are not provided to Google Analytics.

Loan Management

Now users can prepay a loan – fully or partially – before the due payment date. The source of funds can be any customer account or a linked card.

We added new features to our classic web and mobile banking.

Payments and transfers

Recurring invoices 

After a service provider assigns a unique account number to your customer, the latter can save this information in the web/mobile banking app. WAY4 will receive all the subsequent invoices automatically. They are stored until the user can review and approve/decline the payment.

Money request  

Now users can request money from someone they know – by specifying this person’s phone number and the required sum. Both parties see this request in their WAY4 mobile banking app. They can exchange related messages and modify the amount, if necessary.

People who don’t use the same mobile banking app would receive such a money request via SMS. If they follow the specified URL, they can confirm/deny the operation and choose their payment method. 

NFC enablement

Now users can enable NFC for a linked card. The app becomes ready for contactless payments instantly. The operations history indicates when the contactless mode was used and when not.

If the customer applied this feature to multiple cards, one of them should be chosen as the default instrument for NFC operations. 

External payment hubs 

We have integrated WAY4 with more payment hubs, including the largest one in Eastern Europe. It means more service providers whose invoices and bills can be paid from the mobile/web banking app. Our integration plans take into account which hubs are the most requested by our customers.

App-generated QR code for cash operations

Now our app can generate a special QR code for cash in and cash out operations. Your customer just needs to choose a card and then specify the cash amount. To complete the transaction, the ATM scans the QR code from the phone screen. The customer can use any the bank’s ATMs. The customer can share this QR with a friend.

Communication and information

Chat with a bank

The user can send messages via the app. Bank clerks can receive them and reply via e-mail. These replies are instantly shown in the mobile/web app, in the form of chat. Both parties can also send various attachments to each other.

Currency rates

Currency rates of the bank are displayed to the customer and updated in real-time.

Product management


Now users can order and manage instalment cards in the web and mobile banking menu. They see the instalment operations history, applicable limits and commissions, and – of course – the due date and amount for next payment(s). The app also highlights every case of delinquency and fines to pay. 

Multi-currency cards

Now users see several independent balances, each in its own currency, for every multi-currency card. The transaction history clearly shows which account, in its respective currency, was debited for each purchase.


Pre-approved loans

The app can notify users on a pre-approved loan by displaying a message or promo banner. The bank customer can confirm instant loan issuance, or decrease the loan amount first, or completely decline the offer.

Personalized offers


You can show personalised offers based on the KYC data (on the customer profile and behavior analysis). Also the platform allows to present your offers as pop-up messages.

Convenient security

Automatic OTP capture 

Our mobile app is able to analyze the incoming SMS to grab a one-time password and automatically insert it into the confirmation form.

Push messages

Push messages can appear within the mobile banking app to notify customers on completed purchases. (The push functionality should be enabled on the device in the first place).

Messenger Banking Q1 2018 Update

Now your customers can request money from people in their contact list without leaving the messenger interface. Both parties are identified by phone number.

The chat bot helps the user choose a person from the contact list, specify the transaction amount and add a comment.  

The potential money sender receives the request via SMS. If they follow the specified URL from SMS, they can confirm/deny the operation and choose their payment method.

WAY4 Release Management Service

We present new tools that will help you organize your pre-production activities for better speed-to-market. 

Testing Framework

<New set of product options, separately licensed>

With this tool, you can automate regression testing of the following system components:

  • NetServer, Transaction Switch or WAY4Gate (ISO8583, Web Services, SOA UFX messages) inward online interfaces

  • WAY4 standard and customized inward and outward batch interfaces (e.g. loading of application and clearing files, transactions and GL entry batches export)

  • WAY4 reports (e.g. cardholder contract statement), etc.

The WAY4 Testing Framework allows you to create a machine-readable testing project which consists of multiple test suites, test sets and test cases and then run the tests in manual or automatic modes. The solution will compare test results from the test run with pre-saved expected results and define if the test passed or failed.

The solution generates user-friendly interactive test reports that show the total regression test statistics and details of each particular test.

Configuration Management Tool

Now you can compare the configuration of two or more WAY4 instances and see what they do and do not have in common. The elements that are different can be transferred from one instance to another. You can also save a backup copy of a chosen configuration. The data which can be managed are table records, business rules, system settings, FI hierarchy, product settings, global parameters and other configuration elements. However, the tool does not work with sensitive data, such as client profiles, contracts, documents and custom forms.

Configuration Management Tool helps you prove a new functionality in a test environment and then deploy it more safely in production. It saves time and resource spent on manual database setup and minimizes the possibility of human errors thanks to the copy process automation.

Clone Wizard

Now you can test different copies of the WAY4 database and choose the most suitable configuration(s) without compromising real business data. 

The Clone Wizard creates an empty WAY4 data scheme with an identical configuration to a chosen node. You can clone table records, business rules, system settings, FI hierarchy, product settings, global parameters and other configuration elements. However, the tool does not work with sensitive data, such as client profiles, contracts, documents and custom forms.

WAY4 High Availability Cluster: Auto Switchover

<New set of product options, separately licensed>

WAY4 Auto Switchover is a new component of WAY4 High Availability Cluster. It detects unavailability of a primary node and automatically switches the system to the secondary node. Switching is completed within 15-30 seconds. The monitoring and switching algorithm depends on predefined rules that can be extended and customized. Examples of such rules:

  • No connection with a node, connection attempt terminates with an error or takes longer than a timeout

  • Connection errors that cannot be eliminated by repeated attempts (‘invalid username or password’, ‘account is locked’, ‘restricted session’, ‘Oracle is not available’, etc.)

  • System upgrade

  • Insufficient space in a tablespace

  • Mass timeouts

The solution has been already proven in live environment operations.

JasperReport Server


Since Oracle is terminating support of Oracle Reports, we have chosen JasperReports Server as replacement. The new platform provides broad functionality for building standard reports in WAY4 at a reasonable cost of ownership for our customers. JasperReports is one of the market leaders in this segment, being used by various companies globally.

Now OpenWay is integrating WAY4 core applications – DBManager, WAY4 Manager and WAY4 Web Workbenches – with JasperReports Server. Our next major system release will already include some reports powered by the new platform (in addition to similar reports powered by Oracle).

Application Server Management Center

<Product under development>

Multinode console 2.0

We are developing the new console, version 2.0. Soon you’ll be able to update all your nodes from a selected one. Such centralized management will be possible even for nodes distributed across different countries or continents. It means less time and less resources to accomplish future updates.

The multinode console will maintain the unified storage of distributives as well as the storage redundancy. 

New Handy Web Console for Application Server

<Enhancements to the existing product>

We have introduced a new web console, with a more user-friendly interface. Navigation is simpler now, and you can quickly proceed with applications’ updates. Besides, the new console allows you to review and manage external integrated authentication services (i.e. LDAP, keycloak, etc.)

Fraud Prevention Platform

<Product under development>

We are developing a new-generation stand-alone fraud prevention platform. It’s designed for issuers and acquirers who use WAY4 or 3rd party CMS, core banking, or e-commerce gateway.

The solution will support rule-based transaction scoring with minimum impact on the processing system and provide a user-friendly interface. To make a decision, it can use data from internal and external databases. 

Workbenches Q1 2018 Update

<Enhancements to the existing product>

Access Granted Double-Check

The ‘access-granted’ double-check is a major enhancement in all workbenches that are based on the WAY4 case management platform – Claim Management, Dispute Management, Risk Management and others. Processors serving more than one bank are more likely to keep it on, as a necessary security measure.

Whenever someone initiates a document activity via configuration or operation screen, now WAY4 performs a second-level verification of the user access privileges. If the action is forbidden for this particular user, WAY4 displays a message about insufficient rights. More specifically, in earlier releases it was already possible to define fine-grained user access control to cases, through the Case Management-level grants. However, the new Access Granted Double-Check feature ensures an additional control of data access against the system-level officer grants. Subsequently, the combination of both access restriction levels applies – that is, case management-level restrictions as well as system-level restrictions.

Access can be granted or denied for individuals or groups of users. It can cover product categories, financial institutions and domains.

Some examples of how it works:

  • WAY4 always checks if the particular user has the right to manage cases of the selected financial institution.

  • Risk department officers can put a card into the exception list only if they are permitted to manage this particular issuer.

Customer Service Workbench

  • Due to the ‘access-granted’ double-check, the workbench users can only access documents of their assigned financial financial institutions, regardless of the actual contract hierarchy.

  • Now WAY4 applies the ‘Maker-checker’ approach when a bank officer initiates ‘Credit Account’, ‘Debit Account, ‘Charge Fee’ and ‘Charge Manual Fee’ actions towards the cardholder. By default, WAY4 won’t post the created documents until the supervisor approves the actions.

  • The view of the contract hierarchy of cards with several linked accounts has changed. Now the main card resides on the top level, and all linked account contracts are shown under the card. It simplifies the clerk’s work with information for each sub-account. This enhancement is especially useful when showing the hierarchy for a multi-currency card and its related accounts in different currencies.

  • When creating a new client contract, corporate card issuers can select a corresponding liability contract. We added this feature to simplify corporate card reporting.

  • When searching the cardholder transaction history, bank officers can use a new filter – Balance Change Mode. It helps to exclude the transactions which did not change the balance, such as PIN Change or Balance Inquiry.

Dispute Management Q1 2018 Update

Visa Real-Time System Interface, previously available for WAY4 acquirers, now works for WAY4 issuers too. Using RTSI, our system can connect to Visa Resolve Online (VROL) automatically and exchange inward and outward questionnaires, explanations and so on. This interface serves to minimize the need of manual queries to VROL and is fully compatible with new Visa VCR rules. 

Datamart Q1 2018 Update

<Enhancements to the existing product>

General enhancements

  • We have introduced a new approach for flexible data loading. Now all data tables are grouped in semantical data sets or ‘modules’. Examples of such modules are “Instalments”, “Dispute cycles”, “All issuing operations”, and “Authorizations”. Our new interface lets you easily enable or disable standard module loads. You can also register custom modules and include them in a standard load procedure. Soon users will be able to set the desired frequency and priority of data load.

  • Now WAY4 Housekeeping can merge and compress old partitions and store old unchanged data in a more compact way. It serves to free Datamart server space.

What’s new for issuers?

  • Now issuers can load dispute data – reason code, result code, activity date and other chargeback-related information – from WAY4 Case Management into WAY4 Datamart.

What’s new for acquirers?

  • Now the special Interchange Fee Reconciliation mart shows information from IPS Reconciliation report provided by Visa and Mastercard. If you use the WAY4 Fee Prediction solution, you can also load and compare the predicted and actual fee values.

  • A new table describes the hierarchy of acquiring contracts. Therefore, contracts have got a new classifier to mark their position within hierarchy. It gives you more flexibility in data analysis. For example, a merchant statement can show which parental contracts this one resides under – going as many levels up as you need. Or you can generate settlement reports that cover only merchants of the selected ISO or Payment Facilitator.

Personal Data Management

To comply with the most important change in data privacy regulation in Europe – General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – you can now use Personal Data Management, a dedicated module in WAY4. The new functionality enables data controllers and processors to manage customers’ personal data in a GDPR-compliant manner. It allows you to erase personal data for customers with finished relations and support the “right to be forgotten” which means that after automatic and manual checks the personal data will be permanently hashed in WAY4 (keeping all referential integrity and GL balance intact). 

WAY4 can store extended information about consents, including statuses, processing purposes and so on. The system is able to prepare the notifications for a data subject about the GDPR-related request results. The smart search algorithm identifies the personal data in the processor's database.

To fulfil the customer's right to receive personal data concerning them ("data portability"), you can export these data from WAY4 in the required format. 

Enhanced Tariff Configuration Q1 2018

<Enhancements to the existing product>

While calculating a differentiated fee in real-time, WAY4 can now take into account the contract turnover or number of certain types of transactions for the period. We added this option for both issuing and acquiring products. This comes into its own when several possible tariffs could apply to a single transaction, which has just hit the volume threshold. The most typical use case is a volume-based cash withdrawal fee.

Example of a calculation algorithm:

On March 28th a customer withdraws 500 USD from the ATM. During the current reporting period (March 1-31) this customer has already withdrawn 1600 USD. How will WAY4 calculate the fee for the new transaction?

If the issuer has configured the following tariffs on cash withdrawal:

  • Up to 2000 USD during the period = 1%

  • More than 2000 USD during the period = 3%

  • Minimal fee = 2 USD

here is the dynamic fee calculation:

=> Final fee applied in real-time = max(400*1%+100*3%, 2)= 7 USD

SEPA Instant Payments Platform


<Product under development>

We are developing the WAY4 SEPA Instant Credit Transfer solution. It addresses the need of our customers in Europe to process the real-time SEPA payments via the major European clearing and settlement schemes mechanisms.

In parallel, OpenWay is working up a concept for a more universal platform for instant payments between bank accounts, including payments initiated online via authorized third parties. It would adapt to payment regulations of various world regions and support multiple use cases. We are ready to finalize the new platform in accordance with your specific requirements and launch it into production together.

Visa Credit Voucher and Merchandise Return Authorization

<Enhancements to the existing product>

We’ve implemented Visa Credit Voucher and Merchandise Return Authorization message flows. This functionality was mandatory for Visa issuers from April 2018.

Now WAY4 can get acquirers’ information about purchase returns and update cardholder statements in real time. The card’s available credit balance will be increased immediately, unless the issuer has configured a waiting period.

This feature improves the cardholder experience. Furthermore, for issuers and merchants, it means less chargebacks and less customer inquiries about outdated balances.
